Seventeen-year-old Vimla, who had dropped out from school after Class III due to poverty,is a changed girl now. Dressed in a green anarkali suit stitched by herself,Vimla has joined a English speaking course. Next month, she will start classes on personal and domestic hygiene as well as anger management.

All this after she joined a stitching class started by NGOs Maha Sabha and Jago in Sunet village. Daughter of a domestic help,Vimla also used to help her mother in her work. “The 9-month stitching course changed my life, now I work in a boutique and earn over 7,000 per month. Though I could not study beyond Class III,but now I don’t want to be left behind. I am learning English,” said Vimla.

The success stories do not end here. Nisha (22),who was a domestic help, had joined the stitching course in 2010. Now,she is running her own small boutique at home. Her two sisters have also joined the same class.

Neelam Kapur of Jago said,“We charge Rs 100 a month for this course. Apart from giving just stitching classes,we also teach them basic etiquette, table manners, etc. Next month,Brahmakumaris will come to teach them anger management, how to be disciplined, etc. Once in a week,we will also teach them about personal and domestic hygiene.”

NGO Maha Sabha has provided a room to the Jago in Baba Bhan Singh Memorial Park, where these classes are being held.
