(Image: @uptrafficpolice)The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department, in coordination with Traffic Police, is overhauling the e-challan system to enhance road safety and reduce accidents.
As part of the process, the government said, an online dashboard is being created to integrate the e-challan system with the Vahan (vehicle-related services) and Sarathi (driving licences and related functions) apps, as well as for data collection on accidents. The process also includes insurance policy integration.
The plan
Challan integration
After receiving approval in a meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, the Transport Department and the Traffic Directorate, in collaboration with the Traffic Police, have started the process of e-challan integration across the state at a rapid pace, wherein challans of the traffic police and the transport department are being integrated into the e-challan portal.
In the first phase, the process has begun in 17 districts of the state through NIC and will start in the remaining districts soon. This will not only make tracking challans easier but also enable swift action against defaulters.
The Transport Department has also completed integration of all challans (traffic fines) linked to driving licences through the Sarathi portal.
Accident data analysis
The Transport Department has also started integrating data on road accidents and challans in all districts through the e-DAR/iRAD app (integrated road accident database), and corrective measures are being taken based on the analysis.
Linking vehicle insurance?
Officials said there are also plans to link e-challans with vehicle insurance and increase premiums for drivers with more than five challans. This will also enable quick treatment and compensation in case of road accidents through an online process.
In a meeting held in November, insurance representatives gave their in-principle agreement to the plan, but clarified that changes in premium rates would only be possible through the IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India).
Officials said an AI-based platform is also being developed to integrate the Vahan and Sarathi apps, e-DAR/iRAD app and e-challan portals.
Additionally, traffic police and enforcement teams are being equipped with modern electronic devices to make challan enforcement more effective.
