A 55-year-old police constable sustained serious injuries when the undertrial he was escorting attacked him with a big knife inside a moving train late on Thursday night. However, despite sustaining injuries, the constable and his colleague did not let the undertrial escape.

Saleem,a resident of Basahi Kalan village under Lalganj police station area of Mirzapur, was lodged in Naini Central Jail in a 2011 murder case reported from Handia police station.

On Thursday, two constables from the Police Lines — Ram Bhawan and Arvind Kumar — were deputed to take Saleem to Mirzapur district court for a hearing. The two escorted him in a train to Mirzapur. Saleem had many cases registered against him in Lalganj police station.

On their way back, the two constables and the undertrial boarded a sleeper coach of Purshottam Express around 8.15 pm. Around 10.30 pm,when the train had almost crossed the Naini railway bridge over Yamuna,Saleem requested the escorts that he wanted to go to the toilet. The escorts released one of his hands from the handcuffs and waited.

As Saleem emerged from the toilet,he attacked Ram Bhawan with a huge knife. “Bhawan sustained injuries on his neck, hands and head. Saleem then tried to jump off the train, but Arvind caught him. With the help of some other passengers,Saleem was overpowered and beaten up. Bhawan and Saleem were admitted to a hospital and out of danger,” said police.
