A 35-year-old woman travelling ticket examiner (TTE) with the North Eastern Railway’s Izzatnagar division was suspended on Monday for allegedly beating up a female passenger at a platform at Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly Junction on Sunday afternoon. A departmental inquiry is also underway against two of her colleagues.

A video of the incident went viral on X, formerly Twitter, purportedly showing the 27-year-old female passenger being repeatedly slapped by TTE Asha Gangwar. The passenger was then allegedly dragged to the station master’s office by two of Gangwar’s colleagues where she was assaulted and forced to give a written apology at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) police station at Bareilly Junction.

“We have yet not received a written complaint by the victim in this regard but based on video footage we have suspended TTE Asha Gangwar while an inquiry is being conducted by Commercial Inspector D D Mishra, based on which action will be taken against two of her colleagues who are seen dragging the female passenger in the video,” said Sanjeev Sharma, senior divisional commercial manager (Sr DCM), Izzatnagar.

Sources said the passenger said that she was travelling with a valid ticket on the Lalkuan-Kasganj Express on Sunday but forgot to take it back from her friend who had to get down at the next station. She also allegedly let Gangwar speak to her friend but she refused to buy their argument.

“The passenger was travelling without a ticket and when I tried to ask her the reason, she tried to run away. I had to overpower her or she would have lost her balance and fallen on the railway track at platform number five. Charges against me are baseless,” TTE Gangwar told The Indian Express.

“No written complaint has so far been given to us by the victim. We have learnt that her family members had come to the station and paid the due amount. They took the victim with her. She had visible bruises on her mouth,” said Inspector Ajit Pratap Singh, Government Railway Police (GRP), Bareilly Junction.
