Tech varsity asks affiliated colleges to verify identity of students

The Gautam Buddha Technical University — till recently known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University —— has directed its 589 affiliated colleges to verify the identities of all students who took admissions to the first year of various technical courses in the 2009-10 academic session.

The Gautam Buddha Technical University (GBTU) — till recently known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University —— has directed its 589 affiliated colleges to verify the identities of all students who took admissions to the first year of various technical courses in the 2009-10 academic session.

The decision was taken after Kanpur’s Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) found that proxy candidates had appeared for 32 students in the State Entrance Examination. In all the cases, the examination forms carried photographs of persons different from the actual candidates.

The colleges have been asked to verify personal details of each student and check the identity from the photographs on the form. “The HBTI has been directed to take action against the 32 students. They will be expelled from the college and a case of forgery will be lodged against them,” said GBTU Registrar U S Tomer.

Last year, over 60,000 students had taken admissions in various courses, including BTech,Bachelor of Pharmacy,Bachelor of Architecture,Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology and Bachelor of Fashion and Designing.

Initially, the HBTI has identified 49 students while cross-checking candidate details after the completion of the enrollment process. “But investigation by a university committee and later the Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed the number of frauds was 32,” said Tomer.

He added that the university had posted all details provided by the candidates in their application forms on its website and colleges could easily verify the same. Naresh Kumar,HBTI Registrar, said: “We have sent the list of 49 suspects to GBTU and the state government and is awaiting their response. The college has withheld the second semester results of these candidates.”
