Suspension notices for 24 AMU students go ‘unheeded’

The families of 24 students suspended from Aligarh Muslim University last month have refused to receive the suspension orders of their boys.

The families of 24 students suspended from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) last month have refused to receive the suspension orders of their boys.

The suspension notices send to their home addresses have returned to the university undelivered and now the AMU administration has decided to issue a gazette notification of their suspension.

Varsity authorities suspect that parents deliberately did not receive the notices. “Parents probably have not received the suspension notices to prevent any subsequent action against their boys. They can later claim that the university neither served any notice nor informed them about the suspension,” said an official.

The university suspended 38 students on May 10 for their alleged involvement in a clash and firing on campus on April 29. An inquiry was ordered in the case but it is still pending. The university had first send the suspension orders to these students at their hostel address on campus. But provosts informed the authorities that the students were not present in the hostels and so the notices could not be delivered.

“Then we sent the suspension letters to the parents at their home addresses by post. We have received about 24 suspension notices undelivered. It is possible that the parents refused to receive the notice,” said professor Mujahid Beg,AMU proctor.

“So I have now recommended for gazette notification of the suspension of these 24 students. It will be published in the newspapers soon that the university has suspended these students but they did not receive suspension notice,” said the proctor.

University spokesperson Rahat Abrar said,”Over two dozen students among these 38 suspended students have been issued show-cause notice as they were arriving the campus despite a ban on their entry on campus.”
