Opening day presentation of puppet festival tugs at heartstrings

Non-verbal presentation ‘Taming The Wild’ marked the opening of the National Puppet Festival that began in Lucknow on Thursday evening.

Comprising four episodes, the Dolls Theatre,Kolkata presentation used artistic puppets to tell stories based on the symbiotic nature of relationship between mankind and nature.

The dramatisation by precise movements, their changing forms, colour, sound effects and music added finesse to the show.

First episode,’The World Within’,portrayed the life of a pair of golden fish and how an angler captures and disturbs them. Hitting on avarice of man which forces him to encroach upon the lives of other creatures, the tale ends with fishes uniting and destroying the angler’s net, symbolising the triumph of nature.

The next tale,’Floral Tribute’,brought comic relief to the presentation. Here a woodcutter tries to cut a small shrub with a variety of tools and machines but nature saves the shrub.

The small plant acquires supernatural powers and along with birds and insects scares the woodcutter away.

The third episode,’Movement In Wilderness’ was a gripping depiction of nature’s rhythm. Revolving around the flora and fauna, puppet birds were shown discovering a musical tone when they incidentally sit on a tabla. Later,a feather plays a guitar and spider learns to dance to tunes emanating from nature. The episode ends with hatching of an egg, again, symbolising the birth of another era.

In the ‘Call of the Wild’,there are two Kingfisher playful birds on a sea-shore. Here too human being plays spoilsport catching one of the two birds that was dancing merrily. The protest by the other bird and the culmination of the story with image of a pearl rising from a shell once again symbolises the triumph of nature.

Although each episode stood out for technical perfection and focus, perfect coordination and lighting techniques made the final episode truly mesmerising.

The four-day festival is a joint presentation of North Central Zone Cultural Centre and Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy.
