After a month-long protest demanding a hike in their stipend from Rs 1,949 to Rs 8,900 and after being allegedly thrashed by the police during Tuesday’s dharna, the interns of CSMMU have finally come to a settlement with the varsity administration.

“The administration called us for talks late on Tuesday night and assured us that the government is seriously considering the matter,” said an intern. “Also,a delegation of students met medical education minister Lalji Verma on Wednesday. He assured us that by June 21,the government order regarding the stipend will reach the university.”

The minister will also call a meeting of the university administration and the students to settle matters regarding suspension and expulsion of students,he said.

“The administration signed on the documents, saying that appropriate procedures will be adopted regarding Dr Manish Bajpai so he stops functioning as assistant warden and member of proctoral board,” he said. “Dr Bajpai has been abusing and ill-treating interns and other students.”

Refusing to comment on Bajpai’s case,Vice-Chancellor Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal said the interns need not have protested,as the government was already considering their matter. She also denied that they were beaten up by the police.

“The media seems to have sympathies with the interns,” she said. “They were breaking public property and brickbatting the policemen when the police took up the lathi. But there is a difference between picking up the lathi and using it. None of the students were hit.”
