SOG cop dies in Chitrakoot encounter

A constable of Special Operation Group of Chitrakoot police was killed and two others sustained serious bullet injuries in an encounter with a dacoit at Jamauli village in Chitrakoot district on Tuesday.

A constable of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Chitrakoot police was killed and two others sustained serious bullet injuries in an encounter with a dacoit at Jamauli village in Chitrakoot district on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off,the Chitrakoot police raided a house around 11 am on Tuesday in Jamauli. Police received the information that Naan Kewat alias Ghanshyam Kewat,the head of Kewat gang,was hiding in the house. Ghanshyam had killed a SOG personnel last year and is carrying a reward of Rs 50,000. Nearly 50 km from the district headquarters,Jamauli village is dominated by Nishads,the community Ghanshyam belongs to.

On Tuesday,the police team,including members of the SOG,cordoned off the area and shifted the residents of Jamauli and Sorwal villages to other places.

But when the police reached near the house,Ghanshyam opened fire at them. While constable Shamim died on the spot,two policemen Rajendra and Dilip Tiwari sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Following the news of the encounter,SP Rakesh Pradhan,ASP Jugal Kishore and all the circle officers reached the spot and took over the operations. The encounter lasted till late in the evening,but the bandits managed to escape.

The ADG (Law & Order) Brij Lal said Chitrakoot Dham Range DIG SK Singh and SP Rakesh Pradhan are camping at Sarwal village. Two companies of PAC and STF commandoes have been dispatched to join the operation. The force would begin combing the area from Wednesday morning,he said. “We have cordoned off the village,” said Jugal Kishore.
