Blaming the non-Congress governments for the backwardness of UP for the past 22 years,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said the Centre had tried its best to improve the states situation.
Addressing his first election rally in UP at Kanpurs Moti Jheel,Singh appealed to the people to repose their faith in Rahul Gandhi for the sake of progress.
In the last few years,he (Rahul) has been visiting villages trying to understand how can the state witness a new wave of progress. I am optimistic that you will vote for him in support of his determination.
In the 2009 parliamentary elections also, the PM had initiated the campaign in UP from Kanpur.
Expressing his concern for the industries in Kanpur,he said: This industrial town (was known as Indias Manchester),but most of the famous industries here are now defunct. The situation is same in the other cities too.
Some local Congress leaders sought his intervention for revival of some of the defunct factories, which have long been a key election issue. The PM also reminded that at least 32 mills supplying yarn to the weavers have closed down in the state,as a result of which the weavers community was facing economic hardships.
On the contributions made by the Centre for the citys development,Singh said the long pending demand of Kanpur-Farukhabad-Kasaganj-Mathura rail line has now been converted into broad gauge. He also pointed that four-lane roads have been sanctioned for the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, who is also the MP from Kanpur, claimed an undercurrent in favour of the Congress and said most of the seats in Kanpur would be won by the Congress. Then you (the PM) can be sure that whatever money is sent to the state, will be utilised 100 per cent, he said.
