Producers are churning out unpalatable stuff because we are buying it and unless you stop taking stuff that is worth less than your money, they won’t stop giving you less than what you deserve, opines actor Farooque Sheikh, who symbolises quality cinema for the kind of performance he has delivered over a span of 37 years. In Lucknow to participate in Faasle,a film festival being held jointly by Aman Trust and Sanatkada, handicraft outfit,Sheikh said once the viewer stood up against the raw deal, there could be reprieve.
Does anyone ever write to a filmmaker to complain about the sheer waste of time and money the film he saw caused him, he said, presenting the RSS model in which postcards are issued to members to right to any authority about anything that needs to be set right.
He makes no bones about his own contribution to the sorry scene. I was in a major flop Saas Bahu Aur Sensex last year and a bigger fiasco Accident on Hill Road this year. I did both films because I felt the filmmakers wanted to convey a message of social importance. But because they were bad films,so they sank without a trace. Once rejected, the filmmaker wouldn’t repeat the folly,he averred.
Television is a bigger disaster if you consider its immense potential, he said on being asked to decide which was the bigger evil. Its another example of the compacent society that we are. For years we chewed the cud of the 1993 carnage till we got Gujarat to chew on as we wait for another fiasco to be our cud. We allow television to influence us,instead of influencing television channels to cause the changes we want and deserve.
Sheikh would accompany the audience for a show of his debut film Garam Hawa at Rai Umanath Bali on Saturday,3pm,and interact with them after the show.
