Rains wreak havoc,14 dead

Fourteen people were killed in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh.

Fourteen people were killed in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh. Three persons each were killed in Kaushambi,Hardoi and Partapgarh districts,two each in Ballia and Bhadoi and one in Etawah since last evening,said officials.

Most of them were killed in incidents of lightning and and house collapse,they said.

Two teenagers were swept away by surging waters in Dubahar and Haldi areas in Ballia district as moderate to heavy showers drenched the state.

Three persons were killed in incidents of house collapse,triggered by heavy downpours,in Partapgarh district while a 16-year-old girl was killed in a rain-related incident in Etawah. Two persons were killed when lightning struck them in Bhadoi district.

In Kaushambi,three persons were killed in house collapses and lightning and three of a family perished in Beniganj area in Hardoi district.

Meanwhile,water level in major rivers,including Ghagra,Sharda,Ganga and Rapti,was rising rapidly,said Central Water Commission.

Ganga was flowing above the danger mark in Ghazipur and Ballia and was rising in Varanasi and Farukkhabad. Ghagra had crossed the red mark at Elgin Bridge (Barabanki) and Ayodhya,the Commission said.

In Ballia,an embankment near Gaighat was damaged due to strong currents of the Ganga river and repair work was going on on a war-footing,SDM Santish Shrama said.
