Televisions producers may have traded the enriching appeal of quiz shows for reality shows, but thankfully children even in this day and age continue to participate enthusiastically in and crack quiz contests. This was more than evident at the inter-school IT Wiz Quiz organised by Tata Consultany Services at Ravindralay on Tuesday, children of different teams pounced on the buzzer to outdo each other even as quizmaster Giri Balasubramaniam, aka Pickbrain, threw up one brainteaser at them after the other.
Even the guest of honour filmmaker Muzaffar Ali couldn’t help noticing the brilliance of the little wizards and expressed hope that all these brains wouldn’t make an exodus but stay back for the nation’s benefit.
Information technology was the theme of the quiz and rather than being struck dumb or fumbling, the contestants vied against each other to give the correct answer first.
Pranshul Agarwal and Subrat Chaturvedi of Lucknow Public School,Sector D emerged the winners while the sector I branch of the same school were declared the runners-up.
Well attended by more than 1,100 students from Lucknow,Dehradun,Nainital,Kanpur,Allahabad,Faizabad,Gorakhpur,Bareilly,Varanasi, the quiz tested the contestants knowledge of computers and leading IT companies, their presence of mind and ability to think laterally.
It was divided into several mind-boggling rounds. In ‘twittering’ there were topics from IT happenings from across the globe,in ‘@TCS’ the focus was on TCS and its achievements, while ‘tagging’ was the visual round. Crop IT was a round requiring speed of thought and a good bandwidth of IT,and in Swods-a round the contestants had to see what others dont see. The quiz aimed at enhancing IT awareness among students and reflected the popularity of IT-awareness amongst the new generation.
LPS teams outclassed rivals from St John Bosco College,Seth MR Jaipuria College,Summer Valley School and Jaipuria College,Kanpur in every round.
As the winners walked away with laptops and runners-up with cameras & digital photo frames,Jayant Krishna,Regional Manager,TCS promised more such shows in Lucknow.
