Pratibha Patil denies claim by V K Singh: didn’t tell him not to quit

Patil said she had told Singh to Keep all issues aside and serve the nation.

Former president Pratibha Patil on Friday contradicted retired General V K Singh’s claim that she had advised him not to resign over the controversy over his date of birth.

She said she had in fact told the former Army Chief that it was for him to decide whether or not to quit.

Singh has said in his autobiography,Courage and Conviction, that when he met Patil after withdrawing his petition in the Supreme Court, she had told him,“I hope you are not thinking of resigning… If you do that, history will say you were only interested in your age extension. You must carry on the work you are doing.”

On Friday,Patil told reporters that Singh had met her as she was the supreme commander of the armed forces, and told her that he was under a lot of political pressure and wanted to resign.

Patil said she had then told Singh: “Keep all issues aside. Your first duty is to serve the nation. Whether to resign or not,it is your decision.”
