Samajwadi Party candidate Rajmati Nishad defeated BSP-backed Independent candidate Jitendra Kumar Jaiswal alias Pappu Bhaiyya by a margin of 26,058 votes to win the Pipraich Assembly by-election on Friday.

Rajmati is widow of former minister Jamuna Prasad Nishad, who died in a road accident in November 2010. He had won the 2007 assembly elections as the BSP candidate.

Rajmati decided to contest the by-election as an independent, defying the BSP decision to stay away from assembly by-elections in view of the short time left for the general election. The Congress extended her its support. Later,Rajmati joined the SP. The BSP tacitly supported Jaiswal who had fought against Rajmati’s husband in 2007.

Rajmati secured 56,019 votes, almost 45 per cent of the total votes cast, while Jaiswal got 29,961 votes. BJP candidate Radheshyam Singh was placed third with 23,719 votes. Other 10 candidates lost their deposit.
