‘Overloaded’ boat capsizes,6 drown

Six persons drowned to death after a boat capsized in river Yamuna in Chitrakoot district on Thursday noon. The bodies were fished out late this evening.

Those who died were between the age group 18-30 and belonged to Yusufpur locality in Sarai Aakil police station area of Kaushambi district,confirmed Kaushambi district magistrate (DM) Satyendra Singh.

The DM said that a group of 15 persons had left for a picnic at Chitrakoot on a small boat while it had a capacity of less than 10 persons. The boatman reportedly had denied to ferry all the persons,but they insisted for the same.

As the boat was heading towards a ghat at Lalapur village in Chitrakoot,it lost balance and overturned around 12.30 pm. While nine persons besides the boatman swam to the ghat,the others drowned.

The DM also said that they rushed to the place and a team of PAC divers were summoned from Allahabad in afternoon. Following a four-hour effort,the divers fished out the bodies.

The district administration will release financial relief for two of the deceased belonging to poor families.

Scuffle sparks tension in old city area

Tension prevailed in the old city area on Thursday evening after an scuffle broke out between two persons from different communities.

According to police,Golu Khatik and Rehan had their vegetable kiosks in the same locality of Aminabad area. This evening,Golu and his friend Mintu allegedly slapped Rehan,claiming that the latter had misbehaved with a woman from their community,police said. Soon,a rumour spread that a Maulvi had been beaten up by members of another community and people came in groups to fight each other.

However,no major incidents of violence took place as the police dispersed the people indulging in stone pelting.

Aminabad station officer Mahant Singh Yadav said an FIR has been lodged against Golu and Mintu on the complaint of Rehan. He said the people who gathered were dispersed by police using mild force and the situation was normal.
