National Billiards: Dhwaj starts campaign in style

Even as the curtains were lifted on Monday at the Hotel Clarks Shiraz,Agra from the 2009 Indian National Billiards & Snooker Championships,the ambience created in the hotel’s hall— with the 10 green billiards tables adding to the grandeur of the show,was only to be seen to be believed.

Out of the sixty matches that were slated to be played on Monday,40 had already been played,including that of the defending champion in the sub-juniors billiards category,along with the qualifying section of the juniors billiards event at the time of filing the report.

Dhwaj Haria,the defending champion of the sub-juniors billiards event,was in tremendous form as he first crushed Utpal Goel of Madhya Pradesh by 288-78 and then in a stirring display of the three balls art did one better when he beat Sunny Jhadav by 329-66 points in an hour match.

The promising cueist of the state,Malkeet Singh was also not far behind on this day,as he plundered point over point with his brilliant spot potting to outclass C Mani Satwick of Andhra Pradesh by 262-64 points to move up into the next round.

Local hope,Vivek Nichwani was not so lucky going down to Delhi’s Rishit Jain by 288-177 points.

Also impressive was Karnataka’s talented cueist,Mundir Sherazi as he ousted Sahil Sharma of Punjab by 368-90 points posting the highest score of the day.

Ketan Chawla of MP,another winner on the day,had to strain hard to get the better of Aashiq of Tamil Nadu by 233-116 points while Siddharth Mehra,another player from Uttar Pradesh,showed his mettle as he downed Laxman Rawat of Delhi by 213-174 points.

Earlier in the day,the 21-day mega event was inaugurated by Seema Upadhaya,Member of Parliament from Agra. President of the Billiards & Snooker Federation of India Captain PVK Mohan also graced the occasion.
