The Station Officer of Gambhirpur police station in Azamgarh district and two other policemen were booked for murder and placed under suspension after a murder accused Kamlesh Kumar Singh Patel was found hanging in the lock-up on Friday. The police picked up Patel from his residence on Wednesday.
Azamgarh Range DIG Raj Kumar said he has recommended a CB-CID probe in view of the suspicious role of the SO and other policemen.
He said the District Magistrate has been requested to get a magisterial inquiry conducted into the matter. The postmortem examination of the body was conducted by a panel of doctors,but the report is awaited,he said.
Azamgarh ASP (Rural) Mirza Manzar Baig said Patel,a resident of Nizamabad village,was picked up after it was found that he had a hand in the murder of one Azeem of the same village who was hacked to death on April 6. Patel had confessed to have killed Azeem with the help of his paramour Gyanwati of nearby Belwa village.
Baig said the woman had illicit relation with both Azeem and Patel. The woman,along with Patel,allegedly eliminated Azeem as he was threatening to disclose her illicit relations to her husband.
Gynawati was arrested on Thursday.
The ASP said he was informed about the incident by the SO. According to SO,who was briefed about the incident by constables on duty Mohan Lal and Vinod Tripathi Patel,tied up with his trousers,was found hanging from the ventilator inside the lock-up. Patel was alone in the lock-up at the time of incident. Patels mother Sri Devi said the SO and other policemen had raided their house on Wednesday evening and taken away her son. She alleged the policemen have caused his sons death by torturing him for a confession and then cooked up a story of suicide.
