The flag-hoisting ceremony, the Dharma Dhwaj, at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya will formally mark the completion of the main temple on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to be present.
The PM will arrive for darshan and worship at the complex around 10 am, and the formal hoisting of the saffron flag on the main shikhar is expected at about 12 noon, officials said.
In a message posted on X a day before the ceremony, Modi framed the event as a moment of national and spiritual significance. “Lord Shri Ram is the soul of India, the basis of its consciousness and its pride,” he wrote, adding that it was his “supreme fortune” to offer prayers at the temple and witness the historic hoisting of the saffron flag. He described the flag as a symbol of Rama’s radiance, valour and ideals as well as the nation’s faith, spirituality and cultural heritage.
The Dharma Dhwaj is not limited to the main shrine. Flags will also be raised on seven adjoining temples within the precincts, including the temple of the seven sages and the Sheshavatar shrine.
The principal flag to be hoisted atop the Ram Lala temple has been made to withstand weather and wear: sources said it is about 22 feet long, crafted from special parachute material, and will be hoisted at a height of 191 feet.
Its design carries a “sun” emblem to signify Lord Rama’s Suryavanshi lineage, the Kovidar tree motif referenced in the Valmiki Ramayana, and the sacred symbol “Om”.
