Protesting over police action in a case of attempt to murder,a mob hurled brickbats and attacked the police team in Basauni in Agra district on Thursday.
The police had to finally resort to lathicharge and open fire in air to disperse the mob. They later arrested five of the troublemakers and registered a case against the unidentified people for indulging in violence and injuring the policemen on duty.
Antram Sharma of Pura Taal village had lodged an FIR with the Basauni police station on Wednesday night alleging Shyam Baran Singh and others of nearby Parvatpura village for firing at him over a petty dispute, said Shri Krishna,Agra Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural).
On Thursday,the police team reached the house of the accused to arrest him and further probe into the matter.
Meanwhile,over 500 locals gathered at the Basauni crossing protesting against the arrest. As the police team arrived at the crossing,the people attacked them by throwing stones at them.
Additional force was sent to the spot,but the mob had damaged the police jeep by then.
Over two dozen people policemen and locals were reported to have sustained injury in the clash.
