As A united Opposition demanded an adjournment motion in Parliament over the price rise issue, there was some breather for the UPA government from Lucknow where Chief Minister Mayawati in a carefully crafted statement called for a debate on the issue by suspending the proceedings of the House, but refused to take a stand on the adjournment notice.
The BSP,in public interest, favours a debate on inflation in Parliament by suspending the proceedings of the house, said Mayawati and added:The nation is groaning under the impact of galloping inflation. Due to the irresponsible conduct and the anti-poor policies of the Central government, inflation has touched a record high of 18 per cent.
In the last Budget Session, the BSP had helped the UPA government by not voting with the Left and the BJP on the cut motion. According to the chief minister, her party will force the UPA government to take corrective measures for curbing inflation.
The BSP will protest inside and outside the Parliament in case the UPA government fails to come out with concrete measures for bringing down the prices of the essential commodities and overall decline in inflation.
Mayawati was also critical of the Centre over the damage of stocks of wheat grains caused by the rain.
There could be no bigger irony than this where on one hand the poor are struggling hard for a square meal, and on the other huge quantities of wheat are rotting for the lack of proper storage, she said. She added the Centre neither has a policy to curb inflation, nor it has the intention.
