Angry mob ransacked the District Election Camp office at Phoolbagh, after the authorities refused to accept their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) forms on Tuesday.
The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Till reports last came in,the district authorities have neither registered a police complaint nor initiated any action against those responsible for the violence.
Unaware of the fact that March 30 was the last date for submission of EPIC forms, over 500 people turned up at the Phoolbagh camp office. But the district authorities refused to accept their forms. Following this, the locals ransacked the office. Soon after the incident, teams from several police stations were rushed to Phoolbagh.
The district authorities were reluctant to comment over the incident. District Magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar refused to speak to the media and maintained that no major incident has been reported.
Superintendent of Police (Kanpur East) Dharamveer Singh said no case has been registered in connection with the incident. It was a minor incident, but if a complaint was made,we will definitely register a case, he added.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Sadar) Raj Kumar denied that the police had lathicharged the people. Though people turned up in large numbers at the Phoolbagh camp office,it was not possible for us to accept their forms after the expiry of the stipulated date, he said.
Kumar added that the locals were pressurising the district officials to accept their forms. When we refused, they resorted to violence, he said.
