Lawyer held for rape,torture

The Varanasi police arrested a lawyer on Wednesday for raping and torturing a woman and forcing her to work as a bonded labourer at his farmhouse. His wife was also arrested for aiding him.

The Varanasi police arrested a lawyer on Wednesday for raping and torturing a woman and forcing her to work as a bonded labourer at his farmhouse. His wife was also arrested for aiding him.

Raghvendra Singh is a lawyer practising at the Varanasi district court,said Vijay Bhushan,SP,Varanasi.

The ADG (Law & Order),Brij Lal said following a tip-off,a police team raided Singh’s house at Mustafabad village in Chaubeypur on Tuesday night and rescued the 35-year-old victim.

The woman told the police that Singh had forced her to stay in his house as a bonded labourer. He also had been raping her regularly since she separated from her husband four years ago.

A week ago,she had escaped and was staying with a friend at a nearby village. But Singh forcibly brought her back and tortured her — beating her up and cutting her hair and eyelashes. His wife Rajni also was involved in the harassment.

Medical examination confirmed the torture and the couple was arrested. The police also seized three licenced firearms from Singh’s house,the ADG said.
