The group, known as ‘Jal Sahelis’, had taken an initiative to construct a check-dam using sand-filled sacks in order to stop rainwater from going waste and in turn replenishing the river in the region which frequently faces water shortage.
The PM emphasised that ‘nari shakti’ (woman power) enhances ‘jal shakti’ (water power) and vice versa. The self-help group from Simrawari village in Babina block of the district gave over six days of voluntary labour to construct the dam. The water in the river now provides essential resources for local people, serving their bathing needs and providing drinking water for animals.
In recognition of their contribution to water conservation, the group has been honoured by both the state and the Central governments.
Later in the day, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and congratulated the women “who have become a source of inspiration for water conservation”.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mention of the efforts made by the women’s self-help group of Jhansi to revive the dying Ghurari river, in his Mann Ki Baat program is a moment of pride for all of Uttar Pradesh. This recognition will undoubtedly infuse new energy into ongoing water conservation efforts. These *Jal Sahelis*, who have become a remarkable symbol of women’s empowerment by constructing hundreds of water bodies, have set an exemplary standard for water conservation despite facing many obstacles…” Adityanath wrote on X.
