As per Gautam Buddh Technical Universitys (GBTU) annual quality management exercise, titled VIBGYOR,which rates affiliated colleges having BTech courses on the basis of performance of students in the annual exams,no college has made it to the excellent category,as per the performance report released on Monday.
This year,GBTU has come out with two lists: one rating the colleges on the performance of students in first and second year and the other list rating the colleges on the basis of the third- and fourth-year performance. Both are for the 2011-12 session. Although this year GBTU has not assigned any comment against the seven-point scale of VIBGYOR,last year they were categorised as V for excellent,I for very good,B for good,G for average,Y for satisfactory,O for cause of concern, and R for poor.
In the first list, while there are no colleges under the excellent category, there are 15 in very good category,17 colleges in the cause for concern category while two are in poor category.
In the second list, eight colleges are under the excellent category, including Lucknow-based Institute of Engineering and Technology (GBTUs constituent college),Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology,Ghaziabad and UP Textile Technology Institute,Kanpur, among others. Here,as many as 64 colleges are satisfactory while 13 are under cause for concern and one college is rated poor.
Commenting on the rating,GBTU vice-chancellor Dr R K Khandal said the rating has been a routine annual exercise, but it is in no way comprehensive.
It does not take some factors, such as number of branches offered by a college and intake of students, into consideration. It is just to give a certain indication to the colleges,so that they can assess themselves and improve. There is nothing like a below-average college; a college poor in this rating may be good in some factor ignored by this rating, he said, adding that the rating will be updated for the next years assessment.
The VIBGYOR rating was set up in 2007 by the then UPTU V-C Prof Prem Vrat.
