The 16-year-old was allegedly killed by her cousin Monday, who was scared that she would speak the truth about what happened between them: he tried to rape her and she fought back.

Her study room is not very organised. Books on business study, economics and accounting lie next to Oscar Wilde’s ‘A Canterville Ghost’.

After she enrolled herself in a spoken English course, the 16-year-old had grown fond of reading. In her notebook, in some sort of a ‘self-introduction’, she tries to describe herself. She likes dancing and listening to music, she says, and wants to be a lawyer. Her strength, the 16-year-old says, is always “speaking the truth”.

She was allegedly killed by her cousin Monday, who was scared that she would speak the truth about what happened between them: he tried to rape her and she fought back.

This was not the first time he had targeted her. Seven months ago, he had tried to molest her, and she had retaliated by slapping him hard. She had told her mother about the incident.

“She had the strength to face the consequences. Our mother informed the mother of the accused,” says her 18-year-old brother. The accused’s recent attack on her, he says, seems to be an attempt to avenge the “shame and embarrassment of the first incident”.

Her father, a lawyer, passed away in an accident in March last year. “She wanted to become a lawyer and often discussed this with me… she wanted to know whether she could start working directly after finishing her Class XII. She wanted to contribute financially to the family,” says her brother. She had put together her resume and was trying for a part-time job in a mall.

In one of the journal entries, she writes to her father, promising him that she won’t do anything “which may hurt his soul.”
