After the death of a candidate in the 10-kilometre run,which is part of the physical endurance test for recruitment of sub-inspectors,the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to reduce the distance to 4.8 kilometre to be run in 35 minutes. For women candidates,the distance has been reduced from 5 km to 2.4 km in 20 minutes.
The decision was taken by the state Cabinet on Thursday,which also decided that candidates who failed to qualify earlier may be allowed to take the test again with the revised distance. Principal Secretary (Home) RM Srivastava said that,in all,34,000 candidates had taken the PET for S-Is and 7,000 had qualified.
The recruitment process was postponed for a month by the government on February 19 after one of the candidate,Satendra Singh Yadav,died of cardiac arrest while taking the PET at Lucknow Police Lines on February 18. In the last two years,nine candidates have died while participating in the 10-km run.
The Cabinet also decided to change the rules for promotion of sub-inspectors to the post of inspectors. While 50 per cent promotions will be made on the basis of seniority,the remaining 50 per cent will be on the basis of a performance in a written test.
The recruitment of S-Is was conducted by the Police Headquarters,Allahabad,until the police recruitment board was set up in 2008. The last direct recruitment of 1,000 SIs was conducted by the personnel section of the Police Headquarters in 2005.
