The new Governor of Uttar Pradesh,B L Joshi,after taking oath of office on Tuesday,said his priorities will include improving educational standards and the all-round development of the state. He also insisted that he will not enter into any confrontation with the state government.
I do not know how confrontation occurs. Both the Governor and the state government work within the framework of the Constitution. I will work in tandem with the state government and only this will ensure the states development, Joshi told mediapersons. The state government and Raj Bhavan would act like nut and bolt to implement development schemes, he added.
Joshi was administered the oath by Chandramauli Kumar Prasad,Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court,in a ceremony held at Raj Bhavans Gandhi Hall in the afternoon.
Chief Minister Mayawati,Leader of the Opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav,Congress Pramod Tiwari and BJPs Om Prakash Singh were present on the occasion.
Asked whether he would work for restoring the glorious traditions of the Raj Bhavan which used to be a centre of social and cultural activities,the newly-appointed governor said: I have great respect for T V Rajeswar and will not make a comment about my predecessor.
Reminded of the past controversies over the appointment of vice-chancellors and their dismissals,Joshi said the selection process should be made more transparent.
The new Governor will temporarily stay at a bungalow in Gautam Palli close to the chief ministers residence as renovation work is in progress at Raj Bhavan.

Joshi,a native of Rajasthan,has replaced T V Rajeswar,whose term expired on July 7. Seventy-three-year-old Joshi,a former 1957-batch IPS officer from Rajasthan cadre is the 22nd Governor of UP. He was the Governor of Uttarakhand from October 2007 till he was made the UP Governor. Previously,he had served as Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi and Governor of Meghalaya between 2004 and 2007
