A horse suffering from the deadly glanders disease,which can infect humans as well,has gone missing in Bijnore district. On a complaint lodged by the district veterinary officer,the police has started a search for the animal.
On January 10,the Hisar-based National Research Centre on Equine had reported that the animal belonging to one Mustaq,a tonga driver of Rasoolpur village was suffering from the disease. As per law,an animal suffering from glanders has to be euthanised.
Mustaq,whose livelihood depended on the horse which he had bought for Rs 60,000,had insisted on a second test by way of confirmation and the officials had agreed. But they told him to keep the animal in isolation and take all other precautions to prevent the infection from spreading.
But on January 16,when a team from NRCE visited Mustaqs house to collect the animals blood sample,but did not find the animal. In the meantime,Mushtaq disappeared, said Dr Bhudev Singh,a veterinary doctor posted in Bijnore. The case has been registered under Glanders and Farcy Act,and IPC.
