Authorities in Mathura district were taken by surprise when a tiger attacked four people in the fields of Fatiha village,on the Agra-Mathura highway,on Monday morning. While two people suffered minor injuries, two others had to be hospitalised but are out of danger.
The incident on Monday took place when farmers Rohan (40) and Laxman (15) went to the fields. The tiger which was hiding there, attacked them. Hearing their cries for help, two others,Sanju and Rajupal, ran towards the field, and the animal attacked them too.
The villagers immediately informed the police which,in turn, informed the Forest officials.
According to Forest officials, this is the first time a tiger has been spotted in this area. There is no tiger habitat nearby and the closest one is the Rajasthans Ranthambore Tiger Reserve which is over 150 km away. The officials suspect the animal had strayed out of Ranthambore and then lost its way.
Around forest 40 officials from Agra and Bharatpur in Rajasthan have reached the area to catch the animal. Lights have been installed in and around the village for night vigil, tranquiliser guns arranged and cages have been put up with goats as bait.
R P Bharti,Chief Conservator of Forest of Agra zone, said after checking the pugmarks,Bharatpur wildlife warden Kali Charan Verma had told them that it is an animal that had gone missing from the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve 40 days ago. They call it Mohan, said Bharti.
We suspect the tiger came to Mathura after passing through Chambal area in Agra, he said.
Mathura Divisional Forest Officer KL Meena said they were informed two days ago that pugmarks of a tiger had been seen in Agra. We suspect it is the same tiger that has now reached Mathura,he said.
The tiger is not man-eater and has not killed any human being so far,he added.
This is the second instance of having spotted a tiger far away from any tiger habitat in UP. Already, one tiger is hiding in Hardoi, which is believed to have come from Dudhwa National Park, about 170 km away.
