Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand (formerly Prof G D Agarwal,environmentalist) was on Monday taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi from Shiv Prasad Gupta (SPG) Hospital in Varanasi after he suffered a mild heart attack. However,his overall condition was stated to be stable. He had been admitted to the Varanasi hospital since March 10.
Swami Sanand has been on fast-unto-death in Varanasi since March 9 demanding stoppage of work on 11 power projects coming up over river Ganga in Uttarakhand. On March 17 evening,he had refused to take drips after a three-day ultimatum when the Central government did not take any decision regarding his demands.
Chief Superintendent of SPG Hospital in Varanasi,Dr D B Singh,said,Swami was shifted to BHU hospital late last evening and was then referred to New Delhi. His condition was stable but we had conveyed the variations in his ECG reports,which showed deterioration,to the administration.
Chief Development Officer (Varanasi),Ram Araj Maurya,who is in-charge in absence of the District Magistrate,said,We have ensured that Swamiji was provided with the best available medical assistance. He was referred to BHU hospital from SPG Hospital and,from there,the doctors referred him to AIIMS.
A spokesperson for Ganga Seva Abhiyaan (GSA),the banner under which Swami Sanand has taken up the agitation to prevent Ganga from pollution and ecological damage,said that Swamijis health was stable. He was to be taken to New Delhi via air ambulance around 5am. However,he left only around 8.30am, said the spokesperson.
Swami Sanand (80),a former professor at IIT-Kanpur,had gone on fast on February 8 at Kedar Ghat,under the banner of GSA,demanding hydel power projects in Uttarakhand be stopped to prevent destruction of river Ganga.
He gave up intake of water on March 9 and was admitted to SPG Hospital a day later as his condition deteriorated.
