Ansal API today claimed that the family of farmer Naumilal, who had set himself on fire to protest alleged land grab by the construction firm, was being instigated by a Bharatiya Kisan Union leader.

The condition of Naumilal, who suffered 96 per cent burns, was critical. He was not in a condition to give a statement,Gosainganj station officer Ram Prasad Yadav said.

Ramesh Yadav,Ansal API Executive Director (Operations),said the company paid Rs 4.75 lakh — about double that time’s circle rate — to Naumilal in 2004 after a partnership deed with him for his land. He said Naumilal was happy and never complained. The land is still registered in the farmer’s name,Yadav added.

He alleged that Naumilal’s wife Sundara, who is being instigated by a BKU leader, had alleged that her husband tried to commit suicide. “Naumilal’s wife filed a case in a civil court in October 2012 saying her husband had signed the deed as he is a drunkard. After the court ordered status quo,we did not make any construction on the land,” he said.

Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Devendra Pandey said they are looking into compensation transaction.
