Excise officer shot in Varanasi

The Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise Department,Narmadeshwar Singh,was shot dead by unidentified miscreants near Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi on Sunday evening.

Singh (59) was posted in Varanasi and held the charge of the custom affairs at two Public Sector Units Inland Container Depot and Central Warehousing Corporation. Both the units were located in Sant Ravidas Nagar district. His retirement was due in February 2010.

According to the police, it was around 5.30 pm when the miscreants intercepted Singh after he left home. They fired four bullets into his body and one of them hit his head.

Miscreants attacked him at an isolated place. It could not be confirmed how the criminals escaped after the crime. We came to know about the incident through locals, said P C Meena,DIG of Varanasi. Singh was staying along with his family in Shivpur area since 2008.

We believe that the miscreants were following Singh after he left home around 4.30 pm, said another police officer. According to sources,this could be due to department rivalry.
