Eco park: High Court asks top PWD engineer to appear in person

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court issued a notice to engineer-in-chief of Public Works Department on Thursday in connection with the construction of a boundary wall behind the Manyawar Kanshiram Green (Eco) Garden in Lucknow.

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court issued a notice to engineer-in-chief of Public Works Department (PWD) on Thursday in connection with the construction of a boundary wall behind the Manyawar Kanshiram Green (Eco) Garden in Lucknow.

One Sangam Lal Pandey had earlier filed a petition in the court saying the state government was constructing another wall on the main road behind the Eco Park site in violation of the High Court order that was given on September 22,2009.

While hearing the petition,Justices Pradeep Kant and R R Awasthi also asked the engineer-in-chief to appear in person and explain under what circumstances the construction agency ignored the court’s directive.

“The court had stopped the government from carrying out any construction work that would make the main road narrow,” said Altaf Mansor, petitioner’s counsel.

“Without seeking permission, the PWD is constructing a five-foot high wall, which is two metres away from the existing boundary wall of the park and runs parallel to it. Another wall of same height is being constructed on the opposite side of the main road,” Mansor added.

The government’s Chief Standing Counsel D K Upadhyay, however, told the court that a footpath is being currently constructed and the height of the wall would not be more than one and a half feet.

The court will hear the case next week.
