A deputy jailor of Agra Central jail fired indiscriminately at a bar in a city hotel in a drunken state when he was refused to be served after the time was over,in Hari Parvat police station area of Agra late on Thursday night.
Two staffers of a local news channel,who tried to intervene in the matter,suffered gunshot injuries,but their condition was stated to be stable.
Agra DIG Asim Kumar Arun said deputy jailor Hari Baksh Singh was arrested and was produced before the court on Friday. The court has sent him to jail on charges of rioting and attempt to murder.
Agra Range DIG of the Prison Department Suresh Chandra said the deputy jailor has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. He has also asked for the details about the deputy jailors duty schedule on Thursday and about his presence at the city bar,he added.
He said the incident took place around 11.30 pm at Hotel East Lite when the deputy jailor Singh who was already heavily drunk forced the bartender to serve him the liquor while the service at the bar got closed at 11 pm. Singh allegedly picked up a fight with the barman and started hurling abuses at him over the issue following which other employees of the hotel also gathered there.
The DIG also said the hotel employees reportedly overpowered the deputy jailor and thrashed him when he whipped out his service pistol and fired at the gathering. Two employees of a local news channel,which is run by the owner of the same hotel,sustained the bullet injuries in their legs.
The office of the news channel is located on the ground floor of the hotel and the injured youths had tried to intervene in the brawl.
However,the hotel staff later handed over the deputy jailor to the police. The injured Vineet Verma and Rajkumar Uppal were undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
