Sushmita Sen, 50, recently shared a glimpse of working out with younger daughter, Alisah, 16, in the gym. “My inspired gang @alisahsen47 @zellastrid_ Thank you for being this amazing & sooooo much fun. Come join us…let’s get stronger together!!???? I love you guys,” she wrote on Instagram. In the video, Sushmita and her daughter can be seen performing core-strengthening movements, including side knee crunches, traditional crunches, and planks. These exercises work different layers of the core and support posture, balance and spinal stability. “Side knee crunches activate the obliques and improve rotational control, regular crunches strengthen the front abdominal muscles, and planks engage the entire core along with the shoulders, hips and lower back. Together, these movements help protect the spine, reduce the risk of back pain and improve overall functional strength,” said consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal.
According to Goyal, this glimpse is a powerful example of how exercise can be a shared family experience that builds strength, connection and lifelong habits. “When physical activity becomes something you do with loved ones, it organically shifts from being a chore to a joyful, shared routine. For children, watching a parent move with intention teaches them that fitness is part of daily life, not an occasional task reserved for specific goals or ages,” said Goyal.

From a wellness perspective, exercising with family reinforces both physical and emotional well-being. Joint workouts improve cardiovascular health, muscular strength and flexibility for both adults and younger participants. “They also build psychological benefits—consistency, confidence and resilience. When a parent and child move together, the motivation becomes mutual. Adults stay accountable, and children learn discipline without pressure, blending strength work with play and shared accomplishment,” Goyal said.

Such an approach also underlines a foundational truth in fitness: movement is best sustained when it is enjoyable and meaningful. Whether it’s bodyweight exercises, light cardio, or simple strength drills, moving as a team fosters companionship, reduces stress, and improves mood. “It encourages richer communication, boosts self-esteem and reinforces the idea that health is not solitary but a shared journey,” mentioned Goyal.
When workouts are woven into family life, they become an inspiring lesson for anyone looking to bring more movement into their own routines.
