Days after Allahabad High Court granted bail to Umar Ansari, the son of late former MLA Mukhtar Ansari, in a case of cheating and forgery, the Ghazipur police on Sunday opened his history sheet, citing the need for a “close surveillance” of his activities.
Umar, 28, is currently lodged in Ghazipur jail. His lawyer Upendra Upadhyay said Umar has not been released from jail due to pending paperwork.
The opening of Umar’s criminal history sheet comes on the heels of his elder brother, Abbas Ansari, being reinstated as MLA from Mau after the Allahabad High Court suspended his conviction in a three-year-old hate speech case.
Abbas and Umar are sons of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who died in Banda district jail last year.
“As part of an ongoing campaign against crime and criminals, an inquiry found that Umar Ansari has been involved in forcibly occupying public land through forgery and deceit, as well as delivering and instigating provocative speeches during elections. There are seven cases registered against him, and his history sheet has now been opened,” said Ram Sajan Nagar, the SHO of Muhammadabad police station in Ghazipur.
According to police, of the seven pending cases against, four were lodged in Mau, two in Ghazipur, and one in Lucknow.
Last month, Ghazipur police arrested Umar for forgery and cheating in a case of property linked to his father, Mukhtar Ansari, that was confiscated by the authorities under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.
According to police, Umar hatched a “planned conspiracy” to secure unlawful gains, and allegedly submitted forged documents in the court by faking the signature of his mother, Afsa Ansari, who is also a wanted accused, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000.
