After several court orders to Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) to take action against doctors involved in private practice, the university served a notice to 11 doctors on Wednesday.

These doctors were served notice on the basis of a sting operation conducted by CSMMU,along with complaints by attendants of patients. “They have been given 30 days to reply and henceforth,no responsibilities will be given to these doctors,” said V P Singh,Registrar of CSMMU.

Speaking to The Indian Express,Vice-Chancellor Saroj Chooramani Gopal said that the notice does not mean that the university has given a clean chit to other doctors. The university will continue to monitor all doctors and if found guilty, they will be punished in an appropriate manner, she added.

“A two-member committee has been formed to look into the matter and all old evidence will be treated as proof in this regard,” Singh added.

According to sources, during the sting operation conducted by the university a few months ago, proxy patients were sent to the alleged private clinics of these doctors. The notice was served on the basis of affidavits submitted by the proxy patients.

There have also been complaints by patients’ attendants that doctors forcibly transfer serious patients from the university to their private clinics. When the patients run out of money, they are returned to the CSMMU.

Among the 11 doctors served notice, one has been booked for giving private tuitions to medical students, said a source.
