CSMMU forms panel to investigate student’s suicide

A three-member high power committee has been formed by the CSMMU administration to investigate the case of suicide by a student of the university.

A three-member high power committee has been formed by the CSMMU administration to investigate the case of suicide by a student of the university. Sushil Kumar Chaudhary,a final year student of CSMMU,had committed suicide by consuming sulfas late Saturday night,allegedly because he failed in the Pharmacology exam thrice. His father alleged the boy was a victim of caste-based discrimination.

“A high-power committee comprising Retired Justice Khem Karan,former Chief Secretary of the UP Government and former Vice-Chancellor of the Bundelkhand University VK Mittal and Head of department of Cardiology,CSMMU,Dr RK Sharan will investigate the matter,” said Vice-Chancellor Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal. He said,“Among the committee members,Justice Karan comes from the SC category. The committee will submit its reports within 10 days.”

Chaudhary’s father had lodged an FIR against the Head of department Pharmacology,Dr KK Pant,Controller of Examination Dr SK Das and Registrar VP Singh for caste-based discrimination. The varsity,however,maintains the copies were corrected in a foolproof system,and there was no question of discrimination due to bar-coding.

“The boy had cleared the CPMT in fourth attempt and secured second division throughout his studies. He had failed in Anatomy in the first professional exams. In the second professional exams held in September 2008,he failed in the theory paper of Pharmacology by eight marks and just passed in viva-voce,securing eight out of 15 and 14 out of 25 in practical. In the supplementary examination for Pharmacology that he took in March 2009,he again failed in theory by 14 marks,while he managed just pass marks in viva and practical. The third time he failed papers in September 2009,again in theory by eight marks,while he passed both viva-voce and practical,” said Dr Gopal.

“We have sent the case reports to the government as well as the SC/ST Commission,” said Dr Gopal.
