Cops get CM pat for foiling ‘anarchy’ bid

Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday complimented the officials at all levels for maintaining peace during the three-day Samajwadi Party agitation, and said her government would always deal firmly with any attempt to create anarchy in the state.

Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday complimented the officials at all levels for maintaining peace during the three-day Samajwadi Party agitation, and said her government would always deal firmly with any attempt to create anarchy in the state.

Addressing a press conference,Mayawati said the government had foiled SP’s attempts to establish “jungle raj’,which had prevailed in the state during the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

She said the BSP had promised to restore rule of law before coming to power in 2007. Her government had done this and would not allow anyone, whether from the Opposition or the ruling party,to take law unto their hands.

Mayawati also blamed the Opposition parties, particularly the BJP and the Congress, for adopting double standards,by opposing the Urban Local Self Government Laws (Second Amendment) Bill,2011 which has introduced indirect election of mayors of municipal corporations and presiding officers of other urban civic bodies. She said the practice of indirect elections existed in states ruled by Congress and BJP.

Meanwhile, she said,if Governor B L Joshi did not clear the bill, the elections would be held according to the existing system. However, the Chief Minister did not refer to the Opposition criticism of her action in amending rules to disallow political parties from contesting in urban local body elections.

The Chief Minister said the bill aimed to ensure better coordination between the state government and urban local bodies.

Criticizing the Opposition for putting “unnecessary” pressure on the Governor for not clearing the Bill, she said constitutional provisions allowed the state legislature to make laws relating to elections of urban local bodies.
