Calling the countrywide bandh organised by the Opposition illegal, the Congress criticised the Samajwadi Party and the CPM on Monday for supporting it and alleged that they have become BJP followers.

The State Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said: “The SP makes big claims of supporting secular forces, but it is clear now that the party has accepted the BJP’s leadership. It seems they are losing the people’s confidence.”

Joshi said in 1997,the SP was part of the United Front government, which had passed an ordinance about deregulating prices of kerosene, petrol and diesel.

Increasing the prices of petroleum products was a very difficult decision for the UPA government, but it was the need of the hour and people understand this.

The bandh, she said, did not enjoy any public support in the state and hence, organising such bandhs by political parties in power was uncalled for,she added.
