The Congress and the BJP asked the state government on Thursday to take action against Shahi Imam of Delhis Jama Masjid,Syed Ahmed Bukhari, for reportedly calling the UPA government at the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government terrorists.
The Imam reportedly had made the statement during a recent visit to Sanjarpur village in Azamgarh from where several youths have been arrested in connection with terrorist activities.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Assembly,Congress leader Pramod Tewari said Bukhari is a self-styled leader and his statement was not just irresponsible but also aimed at destabilising the country.
Drawing a parallel,Tewari said both Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Bukhari were exploiting Hindus and Muslims respectively for their narrow political ends.
Bukharis statement is a clear case of treason. Making this allegation against the Union and the state government is a serious matter and an insult to the nation, said BJP MLA Hukum Singh.
Bukhari had gone to Sanjarpur to meet the families of the youths charged for terror activities, but he never bothered to visit the martyrs of the Kargil war,he added. Daring the BSP government to take action against the cleric, the BJP member accused the state government of acting soft on Bukhari since it feared the loss of Muslim votes.
In defence,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma said the state government has taken action wherever required and was capable of dealing with any threat to law and order, unity and integrity of the country.
In an adjournment notice, the Congress raised the issue of spurt in the activities of Maoists along the Indo-Nepal border and said ultras from the Himalayan nation were terrorising the locals.
Mata Prasad Pandey of the Samajwadi Party drew attention to the alleged trade in illegal weapons along the border and said the police and the SSB were incapable of manning the border.
In reply,Lalji Verma told the members that the issue was raised by the state government during the recent meet of chief ministers on internal security.
The state government had urged the Centre for repair and construction of border pillars, registration of all those crossing the border, and signing of an extradition treaty with the Nepal government. Verma added that Uttar Pradesh had submitted a proposal for the construction of border roads.
