Clash during religious procession

A sectarian clash took place in Bazar Khala area of Lucknow’s old city.

A sectarian clash took place in Bazar Khala area of Lucknow’s old city Wednesday morning after stones were pelted on a religious procession taken out by a Muslim sect to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali.

Unruly mob looted and later set ablaze makeshift shops and damaged vehicles. The situation was brought under control after around one-and-a-half-hour when police used force to disperse the crowd.

Business establishments in the area remained closed. Owners claimed they had shut down their shops fearing any untoward situation. Heavy police force,including PAC and RAF,were deployed but no person was arrested.

Lucknow’s Senior SP J Ravinder Goud said the situation was under control and they are keeping a vigil in the area.

Chowk Circle Officer Sarvesh Kumar said no one have been reported injured. He said the procession,which had around 50,000 numbers,started from Sahadatganj area and had to go to Talkatora passing through Bazar Khala locality.

The incident took place when the procession reached the Bhadeva telephone exchange in Bazar Khala area. Unidentified person pelted stone on the procession leading to a stampede-like situation.
