Chess veteran Naveen Kumar Wal is no more. The chess player who was popular in the chess fraternity across the country,passed away last night after a brief illness.

Chess veteran Naveen Kumar Wal is no more. The chess player who was popular in the chess fraternity across the country,passed away last night after a brief illness. Wal,for whom chess was his passion,had organised many district,state,national and international tournaments. He successfully organised the Rs 15-lakh prize money chess tournament at Delhi from December 23 to 29,2009.

In his death,the country has lost an able chess tournament organiser who devoted his entire life to chess promotion. With the organisation of Piloo Mody Chess Tournament,Wal was able to make the game popular in Lucknow. Starting this tournament at district level,he brought it to an international level in its last edition in which various Grand Masters and International Masters took part. He had plans to organise the Piloo Mody Chess Tournament at Lucknow in December this year in a big way. Wal brought the name of Lucknow on international map in the field of chess. Presently,he was the president of the Chess Association of India. President UP Chess Association Prabhat Chandra Chaturvedi and a number of state sports associations have expressed grief over the sudden demise of Wal. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
