Central nod to elephant reserve

The Centre has finally passed the official notification of the Bijnor Elephant Reserve..

The Centre has finally passed the official notification of the Bijnor Elephant Reserve.

The area comprises 744 sq km in Bijnor plantation division,Shivalik range and the Najibabad area of the state. The state Chief Wildlife Warden,BK Patnaik,said: “The official notification of the area has finally been confirmed by the Centre this week. We will receive the funds which will help in improving the area.”

The proposal for setting up of the elephant reserve was initially sent in 2006. Last year,the state government notified the area as an elephant reserve.

Now,the state Forest department will be entitled to funds underCentrally-sponsored Project Elephant.

“As of now,the Forest department was getting funds to the tune of Rs 35 lakh for the area,” said a senior Forest department official.

“From now on,the department will receive Rs 50 lakh. The funds will be utilised for the improvement of the habitat,security,protection of elephant and the residents surrounding the area,” added the official.
