CB-CID to probe custody deaths

The state government on Tuesday ordered that the cases related to deaths in police custody will now be investigated by the CB-CID wing of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

The state government on Tuesday ordered that the cases related to deaths in police custody will now be investigated by the CB-CID wing of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Secretary (Home) Mahesh Gupta said following the government directives,the Home department has transferred investigation of four such cases to the CB-CID. The cases are from Allahabad,Bahraich,Sitapur and Etah areas.

The cases are as follows:

ALLAHABAD: On February 14 last year,Sanjay Nishad (22) and Ashok Nishad (30) were arrested by the Ghoorpur police along with two others — Mukesh Nishad (32) and Devanand Goswami (27). The police claimed that the youths had attempted to rob a beer shop and that they had also fired at them,injuring Kamlesh Pandey,a constable. The youths were brought to the police station where they were allegedly tied to poles and assaulted with rifle butts and sticks.

While Mukesh and Devanand sustained serious injuries,Sanjay and Ashok died in custody. The bodies of the two youths were hurriedly cremated in the presence of senior police officers the next night. The erring policemen were later dismissed from services and a case of murder registered. The district police had recommended a CB-CID probe into the case.

BAHRAICH: Four policemen,including the station officer,were suspended and a murder case registered against them in connection with the custodial death of an accused in Hardi area on March 21. Mohammad Umar alias Badkau was arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and rape of a girl. He had hanged himself from the ventilator rod inside the Haldi police station lock-up later in the night. He was rushed to the hospital where he died the next day.

ETAH: Vijay Singh (50) died allegedly in police custody in Aliganj area last Sunday. Six of the erring policemen,who were suspended later,had claimed that Singh died of a heart attack.

The incident had taken place when the police team raided Vijay’s house looking for his son Ishwar Dayal — an accused in a case. The local CJM court had also issued a non-bailable warrant against Ishwar. When the police did not find Ishwar,they picked up Vijay. On way to the police station,Vijay fell unconscious and was later declared dead on arrival at the district hospital.

SITAPUR: Harihar (24) hanged himself from the ventilator in the lock-up of Sandana police station last Sunday. He was arrested for allegedly killing his paramour Arti (20) last Wednesday.
