The Bahujan Samaj Party’s plan to hold nationwide agitation against the Women’ Reservation Bill (WRB) on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar on April 14 is aimed at countering the Congress’s “Yatra” programme across the state beginning the same day, party sources said.

The Congress had announced its “Yatra” programme from April 14 three weeks ago.

At her yesterday’s rally in Lucknow,Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati announced the decision to launch a phase-wise national agitation against the Bill during which her party plans to spread the message that the legislation runs counter to thoughts of Ambedkar.

BSP sources said Ambedkar’s birth anniversary has been deliberately chosen to start the agitation against the Bill. “Reservation is always an emotional issue for the Dalits across the country. The party wants to communicate to the SCs/STs that the present shape of the Women’s Reservation Bill is against the thoughts of the Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” a BSP source said, adding the Congress would be targeted for not giving separate reservations for the SCs/STs,the religious minority and the poor among the upper castes in the proposed WRB.

Meanwhile,Mayawati today held talks with her party’s top functionaries from different states, asking them to tell people that the Bill is against the thoughts of Ambedkar,a BSP source said.

“The idea is to project the Congress as an enemy of Dalits across the country by highlighting the negative points of the Bill. The Congress is currently dedicating its total energy in UP. So,the BSP’s game plan is to force it to divert its attention in other states to keep its own Dalit vote bank intact,” the source said.

As per the BSP’s assessment, this is right time to make an attempt to woo Dalits in states like West Bengal and Bihar, the two states that are poll-bound.
