The UP Police has invoked Gangster Act against BSP legislator Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit and nine others for allegedly abducting 14 members of Jahangirabad Block Development Committee in Bulandshahr to help a candidate to win the BDC chairman election.
The application of the Gangster Act would make it difficult for Sharma and his accomplice to get bail. Also, the police would now get a years time to file a chargesheet against the accused.
Among those against whom Gangster Act has been applied are MLAs gunner Pramod Yadav and aide Navin Thakur. Both are, however, absconding.
Sharma, who represents Dibai constituency in the Assembly, was arrested along with his brother Prem Kumar and 10 others on December 22 the day of the election. The MLAs another brother Mukesh was arrested a day after.
According to the police,Sharma and his men wanted to ensure the victory of Maya Devi, the wife of Additional Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) of Ghaziabad Arjun Singh. The ARTO has also been named as an accused in the case, but has not beeen arrested so far. The police are investigating the role of Arjun Singh in the abduction, said RKS Rathore,SP of Bulandshahar.
On a complaint lodged by Brijendra Singh, one of the candidates in the poll, the police had filed a case of abduction, rioting and illegal detention at Chhatari police station against the MLA,his police gunners, the ARTO and others. Following the incident, the election was re-scheduled for October 24 and Brijendra Singh was thereafter elected chairman of the BDC.
