The Bareilly police unearthed a gun racket following the arrest of three persons in City Kotwali area on Saturday. The police recovered 48 semi-automatic country-made pistols and 97 magazines containing cartridges from their possession.
The accused have been identified as Avnish Tyagi,Ansar and his wife Gulshan,all residents of Meerut,said a police officer.
Following a tip-off,the police team intercepted the accused in a Tata Safari car (HR 51 W-3555) in City Kotwali area,said Rakesh Jolly,Bareilly SP (City).
The police team searched the car and found a consignment of 44 pistols of .32 bore and four of .9 mm and magazines containing cartridges concealed under the door panels.
Brij Lal,ADG (Law & Order),said: The weapons were purchased from one of the illegal manufacturing units in Munger,Bihar. We would coordinate with our Bihar counterparts to put an end to the gun racket,which is becoming rampant in UP.
According to Jolly,Tyagi revealed that his brother-in-law,Harendra Chaudhary,had arranged the vehicle and had sent them to his acquaintance in Munger. He had taken his friend Ansar and his wife to mislead the police.
Tyagi also confessed that last month,too,he had brought the consignment from Munger,said the SP.
The Bareilly police are on the lookout for a Meerut-based lawyer,Harendra Chaudhary,who is the kingpin of the racket. The gang used to buy each of the pistols for Rs 10,000 and would sell it at a higher rate, said Lal.
