Barabanki lathicharge: Yogi meets ABVP leaders, stir called off on assurance
RSS’s student wing says CM assured them of probe & action in the matter

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Sunday announced to put on hold its protests over alleged irregularities in the Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial University, Barabanki, and lathicharge on its activists on September 1, after holding a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The ABVP office-bearers said they took the decision after the Chief Minister assured them that an action was initiated into the matter and an inquiry has been ordered at the level of the administration, police and the Education Department.
“We have decided to suspend our protests as the CM assured us that all our demands will be met. He has assured that action will be taken, and some officials have already been suspended. He has promised to punish all the guilty,” said ABVP’s media co-ordinator Abhinav Mishra.
Following the September 1 lathicharge on students during protests, the Chief Minister had ordered immediate removal of the Circle Officer in Barabanki. Later, four other policemen found involved in the incident were also suspended.
The RSS’s student wing had given a 48-hour ultimatum to the state government to meet their demands, warning to intensify their protests. The deadline ended on Saturday evening, after which the outfit launched a social media campaign seeking justice in the Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial University episode with a warning to continue their protests till all their demands were met.
The major demands of ABVP included registering of a case and ensure strict action against all the police personnel involved in the lathicharge. They demanded that the names of officials who ordered the police action on protesters be made public and a high-level inquiry be conducted into the illegal law course being run at the university. They also sought an investigation into collection of late fees and social welfare charges as well as removal of the alleged encroachment on 6 bighas of government land by the institution.
On Saturday, the Barabanki district administration demolished a building on the university campus, saying it was illegally constructed on government land. A joint team from the district administration and police reached the campus with bulldozers and removed the portion. A heavy police force was deployed both inside and outside the campus.
